  Woodland's
6th Annual
Chili Contest
Saturday, April 19th 2008

The Chili Cook-off, traditionally one of our most well attended events, was supposed to be back again this year on March 8th, but the weather didn't cooperate and it was cancelled. It was rescheduled for Saturday, April 19, 2008, and it turned out to be a big event, despite the delay. We had nine different versions of the entree competing in the annual cook-off. Some were a little bit spicy, but many were not. A few variations included chicken or turkey in place of traditional beef. The winner, Clark, who was a newcomer to our cookoff, was decided upo by our three judge panel. His name will be added to the list of winners on the cook-off plaque. All attendees helped taste the chili for the people's choice award, which was won this year by Dave Downey. Most people also stayed for the games that followed and the big movie in the narthex.

Woodland started Easter off with its Maundy Thursday communion services. Then we held the annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday. Woodland's Easter Sunday services this year started at 9:30 A.M. with the combined Contemporary/Traditional Services and children's Sunday School. A special Easter morning children's bell chior presentation started the service. Everyone had a great time and most stayed for a few breakfast treats after the service.

 WOODLAND PRESCHOOL
CARNIVAL
Saturday, March 15th , 2008

Woodland PreSchool held its annual carnival on Saturday March 15th. America's favorite mascot, Zippy, was there from the University of Akron to greet the kids, and he was a big hit with all of them. There was a large crowd to take part in the fun and games, as well as the huge silent auction that wrapped up the event. The festivities lasted from 10:30 to 2:00. All the kids had loads of fun, and so did their parents. Thanks to everyone who helped to support our non-profit preschool.

  Woodland Church
Spaghetti Dinner Fundraisers

A Fundraiser With Great Italian Food

A Special thanks to all who, on a monthly basis now, continue to help support Woodland Church by taking the family out for a great, inexpensive meal. These dinners have been our best fundraiser events, and we appreciate all of our friends and neighbors who have bought tickets and dined with us on Friday evenings. The multiple varieties of sauce always receive rave reviews, and some guests even buy extra dinners to take home. We also have had quite a few people come in just to pick up meals for carry-out. Since these events have been a big success, you can be sure that they will continue to be repeated monthly. Everyone is invited to join us again next time, and be sure to tell your friends. See the announcements on the main page for the date of the next dinner. Thanks for your support of Woodland Church!

February 14th, St. Valentine's Day Dinner

St. Valentine's Day Dinner

Woodland hosts a special St. Valentine's Day dinner each February 14th. The 2008 dinner had to be cancelled, but the tradition will return in 2009. Here is what went on at the 2007 dinner: Our chefs prepared a special steak gilled in the freezing cold outdoors for this very special dinner. Everyone who braved the blizzard to get here enjoyed some great food with their friends. Dinner was served at 6:00 p.m. at the bargain price of $15 per person, which had to be paid in advance to ensure that we had enough for everyone who planned to attend. We started out with wassail and baked brie with crackers, followed by French onion soup, a mixed salad, grilled steak, steamed broccoli with cheddar sauce, and a huge baked potato with sour cream and butter. For dessert, we finished with a fantastic cheescake and raspberry sauce as well as some delicious chocolate covered strawberries.

  Woodland Church Christmas Caroling

Many adults along with our youth group go caroling at area homes and senior centers. We always have a lot of fun caroling. Most of the people in attendance appreciate our attempt to sing holiday music and bring cheer.

 Woodland Church Neighborhood Thanksgiving Dinner

Annual Free Turkey Dinner For Our Neighbors

Again this year, in coordination with our friends at Open-M, Woodland Church hosted a free Thanksgiving meal on the evening before Thanksgiving. A large number of volunteers from the church helped to prepare and serve traditional turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes with gravy, rolls, cranberry sauce, green beans, and assorted varieties of pie to our neighbors. This is an annual event. We had a great turnout this year, and we hope to host a dinner for even more people next year. The people of Woodland Church look forward to continuing this tradition to help bring a Happy Thanksgiving to all of our neighbors and friends!

  Woodland Church
Fall Cookout and Bonfire
Sunday, October 21st, 2007

Hot dogs and sizzling burgers!

We didn't see anything quite like this, just a normal, safe cookout fire with hot dogs, chips, and marshmallows.

All Woodland Church members were invited to a church cookout and bonfire held at the Church on Sunday, October 21st. It was preceded by a youth group hayride at Ramseyer Farms. Then the cookout started at about 4:00 p.m . In addition to some of the best hot dogs and side dishes, we had marshmallows and smores for the event. This was a great fall celebration of food and friends. Thanks to all who stopped by to enjoy the event.

 Barberton Mum Fest

Tom Morrison, whose spaghetti sauce is the highlight of our monthly spaghetti dinners, creates sand sculptures at the Barberton Mum Festival each Fall. This year, our lay leader, Tom Koch, helped with some of the nitty gritty details. Below, you'll find a few photos of the 2007 sand sculptures.

  Woodland Church
Ice Cream Social
Sunday, September 16th 2007

We had another great turnout for this year's ice cream social. As planned, we served a wide assortment of ice cream, cake, cookies, and brownies. This year, we are worked with the Neighborhood Block Watch Group to promote the event throughout the neighborhood. We would like to thank them for their help and participation in the Ice Cream Social this year. After enjoying the treats, we held a brief neighborhood meeting, while the kids played games at this last hurrah before the end of the summer. It turned out to be a great opportunity to enjoy a fun evening with your neighbors. If you didn't make it this year, you missed out on a lot of fun and good desserts. This is an annual event, so be sure to join in on the fun next year!

Pot Luck Dinner and Youth Musical HIStory

On Thursday, May 31st, Woodland Church had the privilege of having the Celebration Singers, a youth Choir from Mountain Park U.M.C. in Stone Mountain, Georgia perform their musical, "HIStory". They presented the story of God's saving grace from the Old Testament through the New Testament.

We got together a little more than an hour before the musical program for a pot-luck dinner with our friends from Church of the Good Shepherd and Christ UMC. They joined us for both the dinner and the evening program. It was a great deal of fun all around with a talented youth group from Georgia and our UMC friends!

A New Sign for Woodland UMC

After many, many, many years of discussion and debate, the church trustees have replaced the old, small, yellow, broken, unreadable sign on the front lawn of the church. There was little disagreement that something needed to be done to remedy the problems with the old sign. However, there was some debate about whether to repair the existing sign or replace it. The replacement option finally won out. Having completed some additional city approvals and electrical work, we have now placed a new, sightly larger, lighted sign in the exact same spot as the old one. As expected, the new sign has turned out to be a great enhancement to Woodland church and the neighborhood.

SPECIAL EVENTS FROM PAST YEARS AND
THE UNITED METHODIST COMMITTEE ON RELIEF

March 25th, Dinner at Church of The Good Shepherd

Good Shepherd, great dinner!.

Woodland members met at the church on North Hawkins Avenue and headed over to see our friends at the Church of the Good Shepherd on South Main Street for a covered dish dinner. As is the custom at most Methodist gatherings, there was a ton of food at the event. There were so many people, that our hosts had to open the other half of their dining hall to accommodate everyone, but there was still plenty of food and deserts to go around. Reverend Paul Beal of Church of The Good Shepherd opened the program that followed the dinner. The Good Shepherd Choir, led by their music director, Ron Corbin, got everything started with some traditional, yet very upbeat, hymns. Then the members of both congregations were invited to call out song requests. They did just that, and it became almost a competition to see who got to pick the next song. Every one of them sounded great in the old Akron-Plan Church, which is somewhat reminiscent of the old Woodland church building on Balch Street. (See the Woodland Church Profile page for photos of the old church.) Woodland's Keith Bachman led the crowd in several more hymns and then followed with a few solo songs. Reverend Kovach, of Woodland, said a few words in closing this very successful event that turned out to be a great time for all. We look forward to meeting with our friends at Church of the Good Shepherd again whenever the opportunity arises. We had a lot of fun.

 Woodland Church Gas Well
Woodland's Gas well has helped to heat the church since Spring, 2005

The gas well was drilled by a professional crew from a company that specializes in gas and oil exploration and drilling. Most of the gas is sold into the public supply, and a small percentage of the proceeds returns to the participating area land owners as royalties. The church receives a small supply of natural gas from the well for its use. Although the stipulated amount does not come close to meeting the total heating needs of the church and pre-school, it does help to offset the increasing costs of heating such a large structure.

  Vacation Bible School

Woodland's special summer event is usually the Vacation Bible School. The most recent event had a western theme. Each day, from 10:00 A.M. to Noon, the children entered the world of the Circle G Ranch, where "God is at the center, and the love never ends." The games, crafts, snacks, lessons, videos and music were all a big hit, and the kids all seemed to enjoy the definitively western scenes that decked out the main church hall and dining room. The little jailhouse and the large(toy) horses helped add to the fun and excitement of this uniquely presented VBS event at Woodland.

The Annual Woodland Church Rummage Sale

Thanks for supporting the recent pre-school and church rummage sales. Woodland church's annual sale was another success. We appreciate all the generous donations of both merchandise and the time of volunteers who worked at the sale. Most of all, we enjoyed the patronage of our neighbors who came and supported the event. Be sure to look for announcements next year to join us for this fundraiser once again.

 Salisburys Fall Costume Party

From time to time, the Salisburys have hosted a Fall costume party at their home. The get-togethers are held in their large back yard. There are always hotdogs, smores, and lots of other great food and treats. At the one where these photos were taken, we had 2 scavenger hunts; one for children and one for adults. Although it was not very chilly on this occasion, everyone still enjoyed sitting around the campfire. Here are the photos.

Responding to Emergency Needs through UMCOR
United Methodist Committee on Relief

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is the not-for-profit international humanitarian aid organization of The United Methodist Church, active in many parts of the world bringing hope, providing relief from hunger and disasters. Tax deductible contributions to UMCOR may be sent through Woodland United Methodist church. Through Your donations, UMCOR delivers hope.

UMCOR'S FACILITY IN LOUISIANA

    • After hurricane Katrina Struck Louisiana in 2005, the UMCOR Sager Brown Depot in Baldwin, LA, was quickly up and running and reaching out to the displaced people in the area by distributing health kits and responding to community needs. UMCOR Sager Brown issued an urgent call for health kits, blankets, and bottled water for the displaced people in areas throughout the Gulf States.
    • Woodland church members responded by quickly assembling several varieties of the UMCOR kits that were desperately needed, and we'll be ready to help again if another disaster should strike. To help the next time we assemble kits, contact the church office at (330) 836-9777 to find out if a new batch of kits is being planned for shipment to Sager Brown in Louisiana. Or follow the instructions here to make your own relief kits and send them to UMCOR.

FLOOD BUCKETS

    • UMCOR needs flood buckets filled with cleaning supplies that people can use to clean their homes after floods and hurricanes. For assembly instructions on UMCOR Flood Bucket kits, visit UMCOR Flood Bucket Items. Send your completed flood buckets to UMCOR Sager Brown at 131 Sager Brown Road, Baldwin, LA 70514-0850.

HEALTH KITS

    • Health kits are easy to assemble and even young children can help in this hands-on mission. Health kits provide basic necessities to people who have been forced to leave their homes because of natural disasters. Health kits are the tools people need for personal hygiene. For assembly instructions on UMCOR Health kits, visit UMCOR Health Kit Items. Send your completed Health kits to UMCOR Sager Brown at 131 Sager Brown Road, Baldwin, LA 70514-0850.

SCHOOL KITS

    • School kits, like the health kits, are easy to assemble and ship. Many children from the Gulf area have returned to new or temporary schools with few supplies. These kits, which UMCOR has often sent to help children in other countries, are now helping to replenish the learning resources that were lost by the children in the devastated southern states. For assembly instructions on UMCOR School kits, visit UMCOR School Kit Items. Send your completed School kits to UMCOR Sager Brown at 131 Sager Brown Road, Baldwin, LA 70514-0850.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR MATERIAL RESURCES

    • Because the cost of shipping flood buckets, health kits, and school kits can be high, you may prefer to send a financial donation so UMCOR can purchase materials, pack and distribute the kits directly from Sager Brown. To help purchase kit supplies, write a check to Woodland church and specify on the reference line: UMCOR's Material Resource Ministry, Advance #901440.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR HURRICANE RELIEF

    • You can help the United Methodist Church respond to Katrina and other hurricanes by giving to hurricane relief efforts of the United Methodist Committee On Relief. Donations by check should be made out to Woodland Church and marked UMCOR Advance #982523, Hurricanes."

DONATIONS

    • Donations can be made directly to UMCOR by clicking on the Hurricane Relief link at the top of this page. Checks can be submitted to the Woodland Church office at 444 N. Hawkins Avenue Akron, Ohio 44313-6197. Please specify the UMCOR advance number above on the reference line. Our church treasurer will send these funds in to UMCOR on your behalf. If you'd like to donate to Woodland's efforts to construct emergency kits, just write "Woodland Relief kits" on the reference line. All contributions are appreciated and will help us assemble and ship more kits.
