Welcome to Woodland Church
And Woodland Preschool

444 North Hawkins Avenue, Akron Ohio 44313
(330) 836-9777

Visitors are always welcome to attend all services and events at Woodland.

Woodland is a small church north of the Wallhaven area with a rich history on Akron's west side. Many of us live in west Akron, Bath, Copley, or Fairlawn, but regardless of where you live, you're invited to stop in on Sunday morning and give our church a try.

If you’re a person who likes to have fun while helping others, Woodland may be the church for you. On a regular basis, you'll have opportunities to participate. You can help serve at Woodland's monthly spaghetti dinner fundraiser; Assist with food basket drives for Open-M; Pass out half price boxes of groceries for the Great Food For All program; Assemble flood kits, health kits, and school kits for the United Methodist Committee on Relief; Or assist one of our groups with special events. If you have extra time, you could even help our trustees with maintenance projects on their weekly work night.

Because we strive to have a positive impact in our area, our church is home to an excellent, non-denominational Pre-school that is open to all children. We sponsor neighborhood meetings and events in our building, and furnish the public schools with a place for annual testing. Mobile Meals uses our kitchen to warm and prepare free meals for delivery.

We support our troops, and their families

Not long ago, we also worked to be of assistance to deployed military personnel by offering our main hall as a monthly place for their family members to meet.

Woodland's people enjoy fun, interesting, and uplifting services. Our monthly communion service is open to everyone--even non-members. At Christmas and Easter, we celebrate the holidays as the special Christian events that they truly are. Between musical opportunities, Sunday school, youth group, our men's group, and women's groups, there is something at Woodland for everyone.

To find out more before stopping in, click the fish located along the left side. You'll find upcoming events listed below in the announcements and news about past events on the Woodland News page. You can also find more information in The Broadcaster on that page. Find out what's coming up, stop in, and check it out!

    ANNOUNCEMENTS

DECEMBER 13, WOODLAND ATTENDEE'S CHRISTMAS BRUNCH

Click to see past Christmas Feast photos

Every Christmas, Woodland Church attendees get together for a big Christmas
feast. This year, we are having a Brunch instead of a lunch. There will be
plenty of Breakfast treats for all the attendees after Woodland's morning service.
So plan to bring a dish or dessert and join us for Brunch!

DECEMBER 13, CHRISTMAS ANGEL TREE GIFTS FOR OPEN-M FAMILIES

    Help families have Christmas

At Christmas, Woodland members adopt the names of deserving members of
local hard working families who are having a hard time making ends meet.
Our members anonymously donate and wrap gifts that they can put under their
Christmas trees to make this most special of holidays a little merrier for both the
kids and the parents. This year's names are available for adoption starting Sunday,
November 29. The gifts are due at the Church on Sunday, December 13, 2009, and
will be delivered to Open-M for distribution to the recipients. Thanks to all who
anonymously help to make Christmas special for someone this year!

DECEMBER 13, ORDERS DUE FOR CHRISTMAS SERVICE POINSETTIAS

Christmas Poinsettias are just $7.00, and you can take them home on Christmas Eve!

Every Christmas, the members and attendees of Woodland Church purchase beautiful poinsettias
that are used to adorn the church sanctuary with a field of festive green and red. The price
per plant is small--just $7.00 each, but the effect on our sanctuary is spectacular. The best
part about doing this for the church is that you get to take them home with you after the annual
Candlelight Christmas Eve Service! So please buy one or two for the church and then have them
in your home when guests stop in for the holidays. They make great gifts for family and friends too.
Any that are left at the Church will be distributed to shut-ins, so even if you decide not to take
them home, they'll be a source of holiday cheer for others. Please place your order at the Church by
Sunday, December 13, and include your check with the order. Thanks for helping make Woodland one of
the most beautiful and festive places to spend Christmas Eve!

CHRISTMAS MITTEN TREE DONATIONS FOR CHILDREN'S SERVICES

    Help children stay warm

Every year, Woodland puts up a very special Christmas tree in the lobby. Our
members hang mittens, hats, and gloves that they donate to the children served
by Summit County Children's Services. The tree is located in the vestibule again
this year, so bring in donations, hang them on the tree, and then the church
will take them down to Summit County Children's Services for Christmas!

DECEMBER 24, CHRISTMAS EVE CANDLELIGHT SERVICE

Our Annual Celebration of Christ's Birth!

Woodland's special Christmas Eve service starts
on December 24th at 7:30 P.M. We will have a festive
holiday musical presentation, carols, and Pastor
Debbie wil delivered a special Christmas message.
Members of the public are invited to join our regular
attendees in celebration on the eve of the most special
day of the year, Christmas. Come by yourself or with
family, pick up a candle, and sing some traditional
carols with your friends at Woodland.

Click here to see a few Christmas Eve Service Photos.

We will wrap up this special evening in Church tradition,
with the lighting of individual candles held by each person
who attends. The sight of the entire church sanctuary awash
in flickering candlelight will be amazing. This is a traditional
special event at Woodland for the night before Christmas!

BUY GIFT CARDS, HELP SUPPORT WOODLAND CHURCH

Help Woodland, Buy with gift cards!

Woodland Church sells gift cards for area restaurants, department stores, grocery stores, and specialty
shops. You pay the face value for the cards, which is their redeemable value at the participating businesses,
but Woodland Church will get a percentage of the proceeds from each card sold. Buy cards as gifts for
friends and family or use them yourself on your next trip to the grocery store. In either case, you get gift
cards that are worth exactly what you paid for them, and Woodland receives a donation from your
purchase. If you buy anything from the many participating stores, do it with a gift card and help out the
church at no additional cost to you. Reverend Gibbons has the lists of participating businesses available
at the church. Turn your orders in with your payment to Reverend Gibbons on Sunday mornings. Our
goal is to deliver your cards to you on the following Sunday morning. Thanks for your support of Woodland Church!

    SUNDAY BIBLE STUDY!

    Join the Bible Study Group!

Sundays at 7:30 p.m., Pastor Debbie has arranged a new
Bible Study at Woodland that is open to everyone. Even if you
attend nothing else at Woodland, this study is open to you, and you
are absolutely welcome to come in and join us each and every week.
The Fall topic is the "One Another Passages", dealing with how we,
as Christians, should deal with others and how we treat one another.
Stop by the church and join us for the upcoming weekly discussion!

    THURSDAY BIBLE STUDY

    Join the Bible Study Group!

Thursdays at 11:30 a.m., Pastor Debbie has a
Bible Study at Woodland that is open to all who may be interested.
This Bible study requires no advanced preparation or homework.
It is an open discussion on what we hear as the scripture is read
aloud. Light refreshments are provided during the group's meetings.
Drop by the church and join us in the main hall (narthex) for the upcoming
    weekly get together!

HOLIDAY FOOD BASKET FOOD DRIVE FOR OPEN-M

Help Open-M Fill the Christmas Baskets

The Outreach Committee collected 26 ounce canisters of table salt for the
Holiday Food Baskets to be given out by OPEN-M. The canisters are all in now, and they'll
be delivered to Open-M. We raised our 200 canister goal plus an additional 10 percent!

    REGULAR SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES

    Sunday School Classrooms

Woodland's regular Sunday School classes have resumed for Fall. Our Children's Sunday
School classes as well as our Teens to Adult Class start out on Sunday mornings in the
Sanctuary with everyone else for a few songs and announcements. After the announcements,
those who wish to attend, head off to the individual classrooms. (Please check with idividual
instructors. The participation in Sanctuary activities varies by instructor.) All Sunday school
classes start at 9:00 a.m. in the sanctuary or in the classrooms. They end at 10:00 a.m., so they
conveniently end at about the same time as the regular Sunday morning service. Questions about our
Sunday School classes can be directed to Pastor Debbie. Check this week's schedule to confirm Pastor
Debbie's office hours. Tuesdays and Thursday mornings are the usual times to find her "In the Office".
If you'd like to speak to the instructors, please leave a message through the church office. This ensures
that you get to speak to someone. That person can then follow-up to make sure that your message gets to
the right person without being lost. (Some personal numbers have changed.)
We look forward to seeing you on Sunday!
